Desktop Outlook is an email client, but it’s heavy going and clumsy, and is lacking some key features needed by knowledge-workers. There are basically two other ways to skin this cat using non-Outlook email clients: a) clients or plugins which use the Microsoft Exchange networking protocol; and b). Dec 29, 2016 - Intended Audience: People experiencing Authentication Failure with Outlook 2016 for macOS and O365. Symptoms: Outlook 2016 for macOS.
So I finally upgraded and got Office 365. I needed to anyways after the OS X Mojave update. I downloaded and installed all of the Office programs available for Mac and installed them. I have been using Word, Excel, Etc without any issues whatsoever. Today I figured maybe I should finally do the migration over to Outlook for my email. This is where I am stuck.
It will not connect me properly to my Microsoft account. I can log into outlook.com and use the web version just fine. I don't have any authentication issues with any of the other Office programs - just with Outlook. So when Outlook starts up I get this screen. Then I get the login screen like so. Once I click the 'Next' button it does this.
At this point all you can do is make sure the email is typed correctly (which it is) and click 'Next' again. However it will not go past this point at all. I can close out the windows, and then I can close Outlook. But upon re-opening Outlook I am right back to the first show above screen.

I did manage to get the 'About Outlook' link in the task bar menu to come up and this is what it looks like. So based on this is has to be connecting to my Microsoft account and validating. I have tried uninstalling Office 365 and re-installing it (and yes a complete uninstall including application libraries), and about every other tech thing I could think of. Outlook is still the only problem I have. Even my Visual Studio for Mac can sign into my account. HELP PLEASE!!! LOL- I am stuck at this point.:( System Specs: Mac Pro 2.66GHZ 6-Core Xeon, 32GB 1333 DDR3 ECC, Radeon RX 580 8GB Video, macOS Mojave 10.14 Anyone have any ideas on something else I can try to get this working?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Hi Erik Roth, Since Microsoft account and Office 365 account are totally different type of accounts, if the account your tried to login via Outlook for Mac is Microsoft account instead of an Office 365 account, according to above messages, it seems that Outlook for Mac client mistakenly detected your account as Office 365 account and thus couldn’t login.
You may try to choose “ Add Others”-enter your account email address, if you still get “Connecting to Office 365”, click “Not Office365”-then in Choose a provider page, click “ Outlook.com” to see if you can sign to it. If you still can’t sign-in to Outlook.com via Outlook for Mac, to better help you, we have a special channel handling Outlook for Mac client issue, you are recommended to contact them directly via Outlook-Help- Contact Support to seek dedicated assistance. Regards, Anna. I have exactly the same problem.
In this case, my Microsoft account IS my Office365 account. I can log in and activate all the applications as Office365, but trying to add the Office365 email account to Outlook 16.19 results in exactly the same behavior. I can add the email account as an Outlook.com account, HOWEVER, I then am not able to use Focused Inbox in Outlook, since this feature only works with Office365 accounts. So, I HAVE an Office365 account, which is the same email address as my Microsoft account, but not able to use it in Outlook. Hi Erik, Thanks for your information. I checked your account, it is not an Office 365 account (Office 365 account is often associated with Office 365 for Business or Enterprise plans and use Exchange online service).
So, you are unable to add your account as an Office 365 account. I think your situation should be: this account is assigned to you by your organization, then you purchased a new Office 365 Home subscription via this account, after downloaded it to local Mac machine, Outlook for Mac mistakenly detect your account as an Office 365 account. You need to add it as Outlook.com account via: choose “ Add Others”-enter your account email address, if you get “Connecting to Office 365” page, click “ Not Office365”-then in Choose a provider page, click “ Outlook.com” to see if you can sign to it. Thanks, Anna.
